Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder - Research and Information

Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD) is a term describing several medical conditions that affect women of all ages. FSD has a distressing impact on a woman's quality of life, general well-being and relationships. There are several types of female sexual dysfunction, the most common being hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). Research has shown that up to 43% of women suffer from some form of female sexual dysfunction - and by far the majority of that 43% suffers from HSDD.

hsdd scientists While HSDD is the terminology used by specialists, this term is not generally understood by patients - who see themselves as suffering from decreased sexual desire. Women with HSDD describe their emotional state using terms such as "missing something", "concerned", "bothered", "frustrated" and "disconnected". These feelings emphasize the clear negative impact sexual problems have on the quality of life and emotional well-being of women and their loved ones.

Studies suggest that up to one in five women may suffer from HSDD. However, the exact prevalence of HSDD is unclear. HSDD is the most commonly reported form of female sexual dysfunction in epidemiological studies and the most common form of FSD observed in clinical practice.

Current research on  HSDD

It is astounding to think that over forty million women in America alone suffer from some form or type of sexual disorder - the most common being Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) - sometimes referred to as low sex drive. Women across America are currently participating in the Bloom Study, a nationwide medical research study evaluating sexual desire and an investigational drug for women with a low sex drive.

"We know there is a tremendous medical need to address women suffering from low sexual desire," says James A. Simon, MD, a study investigator, Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C., Medical Director at the Women's Health Research Center in Laurel, Maryland, and past president of the North American Menopause Society.

"Sexual activity has many health benefits and is a vitally important part of committed relationships," says Stephen Simes, CEO of BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc., creators of the investigational drug, LibiGel, and sponsors of the Bloom Study. While there are currently three U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved medications available for the treatment of male sexual dysfunction - and Viagra has recently celebrated its tenth year in the marketplace - there is currently no FDA approved medication for the treatment of low sexual desire in women.

HSDD research is ongoing, with many companies working on drugs to help treat hypoactive sexual desire disorder and low female sex drive. However, considering the many phases of drug development, it may be years before any drugs are approved by the FDA to treat HSDD.

Although a pharmaceutical treatment for HSDD may be a few years, women are discovering that there are natural products used to treat HSDD which are quite successful. Most researchers believe that the underlying cause of HSDD is hormonal and other body chemical imbalances, which work to suppress sex drive. This is also the focus of most HSDD drugs in development. Herbal supplements work to reverse this imbalance and restore female libido to regular levels.
